Our local program and positions.

These positions provide the foundation for LWV Ashtabula County’s local education and advocacy.

Why positions matter

League advocacy begins with study and member agreement.

A League position is a public-policy stance reached through study and member agreement. The collection of positions selected by members is called the League’s program.

Positions ensure that League advocacy rests on an established, member-approved foundation—not the personal views of an officer, director, or volunteer. A local League may act when an issue is supported by an adopted local, state, or national position.

Members review the program over time and may retain, update, study, or retire positions as community conditions change.

Adopted local position

Land Use with Emphasis on Greenspace

There should be countywide planning with these criteria in mind:

  1. Control development by using upper regions over stores, updating infrastructure, restoring old buildings, renovating neighborhoods, and giving tax abatement for these renovations.
  2. Support greenspace countywide.
  3. Support incentives to preserve farmlands, vineyards, and forests.
  4. Encourage coordinated countywide zoning and enforcement.

Adopted local position

Juvenile Needs

Maintain our goal that the county’s youth be served in the most effective manner.

  1. Encourage adequate funding for professional services and a safe temporary living environment for youth placed in the county facility.
  2. Encourage the use of professionals and volunteers to provide these services.
  3. Continue to monitor the ongoing progress of the county facility.

Increase our awareness of mental health services in Ashtabula County and extend the study on mental health to include agencies providing mental health services.
